HAY’s About A Chair collection shares a clear family resemblance across many different models. Small changes in shell, base and upholstery make a meaningful difference to comfort, clearance and use, so the model number is more useful than appearance alone.
Who designed About A Chair?
Danish designer Hee Welling developed the About A collection with HAY. Its central idea is a versatile shell-chair family that can adapt through different bases, upholstery and proportions.
How do AAC model numbers work?
Each code identifies a particular combination rather than a colour. The exact range evolves, so use HAY’s current specification to decode shell, arms, base and upholstery. Confirm the complete AAC number before ordering or comparing prices.
Arms or no arms?
Arms add support and a more enclosing feel, but increase width and may affect table clearance. Measure the lowest part of the tabletop and compare it with the arm height. Armless side chairs usually allow denser seating around a table.
Which base should you choose?
Wooden legs bring warmth, steel tube bases appear lighter, and swivel or castor bases can suit desks and meeting spaces. Check floor glides, rotation, return mechanism, height adjustment and intended use for the exact base.
Shell or upholstery?
An unupholstered shell is straightforward to maintain and keeps the chair visually light. Seat, front or full upholstery adds softness and changes the colour and texture substantially. Request fabric samples and review care before choosing a set.
What is different about the AAC 200 series?
The 200 series introduced a higher back, deeper seat and lower arm profile than earlier shells, with several base options. These proportions may suit longer sitting, but compare the exact model directly rather than assuming newer means more comfortable for everyone.
Can AAC work as an office chair?
Some swivel, castor and gas-lift variants are designed for workspace use. Check adjustment, support and test certification for the model. A dining base should not be treated as an ergonomic task chair simply because it fits beneath a desk.
Choosing your About A Chair
Choose the shell around posture and table clearance, the base around movement and floor, and upholstery around comfort and care. Record the full model code.
