HAY Quilton is a generous sofa family designed by Doshi Levien. Its sculpted volumes and quilted upholstery give it a softer character than a conventional rectilinear modular sofa, while the range of fixed and modular formats allows it to work in very different rooms.
What makes the Quilton sofa distinctive?
Doshi Levien describe Quilton as a “quilted landscape sofa system”. The phrase captures the central idea: broad upholstered forms are joined into a continuous place for sitting, stretching out and gathering.
The quilting is not an applied decorative pattern. It defines the surface and contains the softness of the seat and back. A raised platform beneath the upholstery gives the original Quilton a subtle floating effect, preventing its generous proportions from feeling entirely grounded.
Is Quilton a soft sofa?
Quilton is designed for relaxed, generous comfort, but seat feel cannot be reduced to “soft” or “firm”. Its depth, seat angle and shaped back all influence posture. It suits people who like to settle into a sofa rather than sit very upright at its edge.
If you are shorter, or prefer stronger lower-back support, try the sofa where possible and consider an additional cushion. Upholstery choice also affects the surface feel and how visibly the sofa creases with use.
Should you choose a fixed Quilton or a modular configuration?
The two- and three-seater versions provide a resolved fixed format and are the simplest choice for a clearly defined space. They retain the family’s sculpted character without requiring a larger configuration exercise.
The modular system is better where the sofa needs a chaise, open end, corner or more expansive seating landscape. Predesigned combinations offer a useful starting point, but always inspect the plan view. The combination number alone does not explain which side is open, where the arms sit or how the modules meet.
Mark the full configuration on the floor and include the deepest projecting section. A modular sofa may be delivered in separate pieces, but every module still needs to pass through the delivery route.
What is the difference between Quilton and Quilton Lift?
Quilton Lift retains the family’s generous upholstered forms but raises them on visible solid-wood legs. This creates more space beneath the sofa and gives it a lighter relationship with the floor.
The original modular Quilton is the more flexible choice for extended landscapes and corner arrangements. Quilton Lift is offered in fixed formats including two- and three-seater sofas, with related daybed and ottoman options in the wider family. Choose according to configuration first, then decide which base expression suits the room.
How do you choose a Quilton configuration?
Begin with how the room is used. A chaise supports putting your feet up without adding a separate footstool. An open-ended module can keep the sofa visually connected to the rest of an open-plan space. A corner configuration provides more continuous seating but requires a larger footprint.
Check:
- overall width and maximum depth
- left- or right-hand orientation shown on the plan
- the position of arms and open ends
- routes around the sofa
- access for each individual module
- whether an ottoman would provide enough flexibility instead of a chaise
Which fabric should you choose?
Quilton is available in a broad upholstery selection. The texture and colour have a strong effect because the sofa presents a large, softly modelled surface.
A smooth, uniform textile emphasises the quilting clearly. A textured or mélange fabric can soften the visual scale and be more forgiving of everyday marks. Consider abrasion performance, fibre content, pilling, lightfastness and cleaning guidance, but do not choose from technical figures alone. Request a sample and view it over several days in the intended room.
Some modular Quilton options may permit different upholstery treatments across the seat and platform. Confirm the currently available combinations and price group before ordering.
How should Quilton sit in the room?
Allow the sofa enough space to be seen as a complete form. Its back and ends are carefully resolved, making it suitable for floating within an open-plan room where dimensions allow.
Keep nearby furniture proportionate. A coffee table should be reachable from the main seats without crowding the deep front edge. Side tables may be more practical for open-ended or chaise configurations.
What should you check before ordering?
Confirm the configuration drawing, overall dimensions, upholstery code, base or leg finish and delivery access. Made-to-order upholstery and modular configurations should be checked carefully because changes may not be possible once production begins.
