Buying Guide

How to Choose a Bed Frame and Mattress Size

A bed is larger than its mattress. The frame, headboard and surrounding clearance determine whether it fits the room, while the mattress specification determines whether the two components are compatible. Check both before ordering.

Does the bed size refer to the mattress or frame?

Names such as double or king usually describe a mattress category, not the bed’s complete outer dimensions. Frames can extend beyond the mattress at the sides, foot or headboard. Always use the product drawing and stated overall width and length.

Will every mattress fit every frame?

No. UK and European nominal sizes can differ, and designs may require a specific mattress dimension or type. Match the manufacturer’s internal sleeping dimensions exactly and check any guidance on mattress depth, slats and support.

How much room should you leave around a bed?

Allow space to approach the bed, open nearby doors and drawers and change the bedding. In a compact room, test the full frame outline on the floor and include bedside tables rather than measuring the mattress alone.

How does the headboard affect the fit?

A headboard can add width, depth and visual height. Check skirting boards, sockets, wall lights and sloping ceilings. If the bed sits beneath a window, confirm that the headboard will not obstruct it.

What should you check beneath the bed?

Measure floor clearance if you expect to store items underneath. Check the position of central legs and supports, and whether the room’s flooring allows the frame to stand level. Never remove structural components to create more storage.

Will it reach the bedroom?

Confirm package dimensions, stair turns, landings and doorways. Understand which parts arrive dismantled and whether the headboard or longest rails can pass through the access route.
