Where will the bench be used?
A dining bench needs comfortable table clearance and room for people to slide along it. A hallway bench should preserve the route past it. At the end of a bed, the width and visual weight should relate to the bed without obstructing circulation.
How long should a dining bench be?
Measure the usable space between the table legs, not only the tabletop. If the bench must tuck away, its full length and depth need to clear the frame. For a bench that remains outside the legs, allow room at each end for people to sit down.
What seat height is comfortable?
Compare the seat height with the underside of the table in the same way you would for a dining chair. Cushions and upholstery may compress, so use the maker’s stated dimensions and consider the finished seated position.
Backless or with a back?
A backless bench is visually lighter and can tuck beneath a table, but offers less support for long meals. A backed bench may be more comfortable against a wall, though it takes more room and can be harder to move.
Timber or upholstered?
Timber is straightforward and can be softened with a suitable seat pad. Upholstery supports longer sitting but needs to suit the demands of dining, entrances or family use. Check care guidance and whether cushions are secured or loose.
How many people will it seat?
Do not rely only on a nominal seat count. Divide the usable length by a comfortable place allowance and consider the width of the people and table settings. A bench is flexible, but squeezing in an extra person should remain occasional rather than the everyday plan.
