A table lamp can soften the light in a room, while a task lamp should make a particular activity easier. Some designs do both, but deciding which job matters most will help you choose the right shade, light direction and level of adjustment.
Do you need ambient light or task light?
An ambient lamp spreads a comfortable pool of light and contributes to the atmosphere of a room. A task lamp directs more light towards reading, writing or detailed work. For a desk, an adjustable head or arm is often useful; beside a sofa or bed, a softer shaded lamp may be more comfortable.
How large should the lamp be?
Compare the full height and width with the table, not just the base. The lamp should leave useful surface space and remain stable. On a narrow bedside table or shelf, check cable position as well as the footprint.
Where should the light fall?
For reading, position the light so it reaches the page without the bulb being directly visible. On a desk, place the lamp to reduce shadows from your writing hand and avoid reflections on a screen. A movable shade gives more control when the surface serves several purposes.
What should you check about the bulb?
Confirm whether the light source is integrated or replaceable, the required bulb fitting, maximum wattage and whether dimming is supported. Choose brightness and colour appearance for the task and follow the maker’s stated specification.
Are the switch and cable convenient?
A beautiful lamp is frustrating if its control is difficult to reach. Check whether the switch is on the fitting, cable or shade, and whether the cable comfortably reaches a socket without crossing a walkway.
Can it be used in every room?
No. Indoor lamps should not be used in bathrooms or outdoors unless their stated rating and installation instructions permit it. Portable rechargeable lamps are a separate category and should be checked for their own location and charging guidance.
